El espresso es un método de preparación del café que consiste en prensar agua a alta presión sobre café molido fino. Este proceso produce un café intenso, cubierto por una capa de espuma espesa de color marrón avellana (la crema), que realza su sabor. Debido al tueste intenso y a la porción típica de 25 ml, el contenido de cafeína de una taza de espresso es menor que el de una taza normal de café de filtro (normalmente 125 ml). El espresso se sirve generalmente en tazas pequeñas, precalentadas y de paredes gruesas, que pueden contener hasta 40 ml. Se puede beber con o sin azúcar. El origen del espresso se encuentra en Italia, donde este tipo de preparación de café surgió alrededor de 1900.
